Discover Your Story: Empowerment Through Your Personal Narrative

  • Collective Impact Center 3295 Meade Avenue San Diego, CA 92116 (map)

Storytelling is at the core of human communication. It’s how we process thoughts, connect with each other, and understand the world. Our own self-images are built around the stories we tell ourselves, but these stories aren’t always accurate.

By better understanding our own personal narratives we can take control of them to define who we are, how we show up in the world, and cultivate the confidence to share our story with others. These are the core skills of leadership, authenticity, courage, and interpersonal connection.

Discover Your Story is a workshop focused on helping you connect the pieces of your life that define your personal story. Many of our goals, dreams, and actions are defined by parts of our lives that are so close to us that we don’t even see them. Through the exercises in this workshop, we’ll help you see the interconnected pieces that define your story. By understanding and connecting these pieces, we'll help you take control of your own narrative so you can share your story with confidence and chart your own path in life.

We'll go over:

  • How to better see yourself the way the world sees you (which is generally much more flattering than how we see ourselves)

  • Understanding the elements of your life that have had the most influence on you

  • Identifying your “North Star,” the object that you've been working towards your whole life whether you know it or not

  • How to expresses your life, goals, and vision as a story that gets people on board

  • How to use your story to make the first steps towards your goals and aspirations

This workshop will be especially valuable for impact and mission-driven individuals. Impact driven entrepreneurs will learn how to connect their story to their offering in a way that will emotionally resonate with their audience. Visionaries will learn how to share their ideas in a way that will motivate and inspire. Individuals that struggle to find confidence in their story and self-expression will begin to see the value of their story and the strength that can be generated by owning and expressing it themselves.

The truth is, our stories have a lot of power. By holding onto them we not only cut ourselves off from the gift it can offer to other people, but it also keeps us from knowing our true selves.

By joining this workshop, participants will leave with a stronger understanding of themselves and their story, and the tools to begin sharing that story with the world. Discovering your story is a crucial step towards brave leadership and being able to express yourself with courage, authenticity, and strength.

The tools learned here can be applied to both personal and professional endeavors. This workshop can benefit individuals at all levels of growth, expression, and personal development.

About the Facilitator: Nathan Young

Nathan Young is a communications coach and storytelling mentor. For over eight years, he's been helping individuals and organizations connect with their audience through storytelling. His focus is on storytelling because it has the ability to foster connection and inspire action in a way no other medium can provide. He’s seen first hand how a well-told story can hold an audience’s attention and inspire them to action.

Nathan is also the founder and executive director of The New Narrative, a social initiative that takes a critical look at the primary narratives that influence our cultural lives to see if it’s time to create a “new narrative” that can be more equitable, fulfilling, and sustainable for all. The primary medium of the New Narrative is storytelling. By sharing the stories of what’s most important to us we can shape the narrative of the world we live in.
